South Farms

regional mapThis area is characterized by valley land that is home to current and historic farming and forested uplands, much of which are intact. In addition, there are wetlands, some of which are associated with Sumner Brook. While suburban residential development is ongoing, the Sumner Brook watershed has been the focus of much preservation attention; over 80 acres are owned by the Middlesex Land Trust. There are many preserved parcels in this section, including properties owned by the Nature Conservancy, McCutcheon Park (which includes Crystal Lake), Guida Farm preservation area (which includes both fields and woodland), and Daniels/Schwartzkopf preservation area. Much of the forest in this area is dry and oak dominated, but as is the case throughout Middletown, there are many wetlands and vernal pools.
